Democratic socialist tries to beat governor’s pick in chaotic Wisconsin primary for governor

Madison, Wisconsin (AP) — A democratic socialist, Francesca Hong, is attempting to outpace the party establishment's chosen candidate in Wisconsin's chaotic primary race for governor on Tuesday. The winner of the primary will face Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany in November in an open seat, which could gauge the appeal of progressives in a vital swing state.

Democrats aim to leverage President Donald Trump's low approval ratings in a state he won in 2016 and 2024 to retain control of the governor's office and gain full control of both houses of the state legislature for the first time since 2010.

Hong, a single mother and former line cook, has capitalized on Democratic frustration with the party's establishment and Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement. The 37-year-old, known for her edgy social media presence and occasional profanity, has advocated for free childcare, healthcare, and a moratorium on data center construction.

However, she also addressed her prior support for defunding the police, stating she would not endorse cutting law enforcement funding. Hong faced criticism for past social media posts criticizing Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, which she later downplayed as jokes.

Despite her unconventional stance, Hong's message of affordability is resonating with younger voters. Her supporter, Dan Jakubek, noted the enthusiasm among young people revved up for change. However, establishment Democrats fear a Hong victory would make it easier for Tiffany to win in November, as her platform would be more challenging to sell to moderate and independent voters.

Governor Tony Evers endorsed David Crowley, the Milwaukee County Executive, expressing confidence that he has the best chance of defeating Tiffany.
