Delhi High Court Denies Bail To Olympian Sushil Kumar In Sagar Dhankar Murder Case

New Delhi, Aug 11: The Delhi High Court has denied bail to renowned wrestler Sushil Kumar in the murder case of former junior national wrestler Sagar Dhankar. Judge Purushaindra Kumar denied Kumar's bail application on August 6, citing concerns over witness influence, his conduct before arrest, the gravity of the offense, and his ability to impact the trial's outcome.

The court emphasized that while bail is typically the norm and jail the exception, this offense is a premeditated and brutal murder, supported by firearm evidence and video footage. Kumar's legal team argued that Dhankar's father, whose initial complaint led to the earlier bail cancellation, had not supported the prosecution, suggesting that Kumar's circumstances had changed and he should be granted regular bail.

However, the high court upheld its earlier concerns, noting that the father's testimony was disputed and the Supreme Court's cancellation of bail was based on Kumar's significant societal standing and the propensity for witnesses to turn hostile. The court concluded that Kumar had not demonstrated a genuine change in circumstances or sufficient reasons to grant regular bail.
