Delhi Govt Schools Face Leadership Crisis As 828 Principal, Vice-Principal Posts Remain Vacant

Delhi government schools are grappling with a significant leadership crisis as 828 principal and vice-principal positions remain unfilled, according to a recent recruitment advertisement by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The Directorate of Education oversees around 1,090 government schools in the capital. The UPSC Jobs Announcement indicates 124 vacancies for principals and 704 for vice-principals, totaling 828 positions that require filling through direct recruitment. Applications were accepted from July 25 to August 14 for these roles.

The Principal and Vice-Principal Government School Association reveals that the sanctioned strength for principals is 950, while 1,670 posts exist for vice-principals. According to the association, 50% of these sanctioned positions are designated for direct recruitment via UPSC, with the remaining allocated for promotion. Of the 475 principal posts earmarked for direct recruitment, 124 remain vacant, as shown in the UPSC advertisement.

For vice-principal positions, around 250 posts under the promotional quota are filled, leaving about 225 vacant. Similarly, of the 835 vice-principal posts for direct recruitment, 704 are vacant, with approximately 400 filling the promotional quota currently occupied by ad-hoc vice-principals, leaving around 435 positions unfilled.
