Covid exposes zeal, not truth

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, transparency is essential for rebuilding trust before the next emergency, according to Dr Anthony Fauci. He was hailed as a symbol of integrity and truth during the crisis, but his hubris in the face of questioning is astounding. While the issue of truth about Covid-19 is not unique to America, the UK's efforts to uncover the truth have been hindered by the reluctance of the medical and political establishment to investigate thoroughly.

South Africa, on the other hand, has failed to pursue accountability. Most scientists, officials, politicians, and public intellectuals who led the pandemic response were motivated by fear, zeal, and hubris, rather than malice. Vaccines, while a medical triumph, were misused as an absolutist dogma, leading to irrational regulations and severe consequences for the economy, livelihoods, education, healthcare, hunger, nutrition, and mental health.

Public trust in government and medical authority suffered greatly, giving rise to self-proclaimed "Faucis" who blurred the science, stretched the law, and suppressed common sense. Among these public intellectuals was Prof Pierre de Vos, who advocated for mandatory vaccination and became progressively more coercive when resistance emerged. Other experts, such as Prof Keymanthri Moodley and retired Constitutional Court judge Edwin Cameron, also pushed for mandates, despite potential dangers.

While some internationally respected medical academics, such as Robin Wood and Glenda Gray, warned against excessive panic and dogmatic thinking, they faced resistance and pressure to conform. The MRC, initially controlled by Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize, capitulated to international pressure and dropped prominent scientists, including Gray, for speaking out against the lockdown's effects on child malnutrition.

The pandemic exposed a failure of the scientific method, with dissenting voices silenced and distortions of data used to enforce compliance. A genuine accounting of the pandemic response is crucial to rebuilding credibility and trust for future emergencies.
