AMH of 0.65 at 30: What this number means for your fertility

An AMH level of 0.65 at age 30 may be a cause for concern regarding a woman's ovarian reserve, which is the estimated remaining egg supply. According to fertility expert Zohra Dawoodani, a 30-year-old woman should typically have an AMH level between 2 and 3, but a level of 0.65 is more common in the 40s. AMH is a hormone that provides insight into egg reserve.

While a low AMH level at 30 does not necessarily mean a woman has very little time to conceive, it does indicate low ovarian reserve, meaning fewer eggs remain than expected for her age. However, Dr Archana Dhawan Bajaj, a gynaecologist and IVF expert, clarifies that a low AMH level should not automatically indicate infertility or an imminent menopause.

An AMH level of 0.65 ng/mL at 30 is below the normal range for that age, but it does not definitively predict the exact time frame for conception. AMH primarily reflects egg quantity rather than quality. Bajaj emphasizes that age is a stronger predictor of egg quality and reproductive success than AMH.

There are several factors that can cause low AMH levels in younger women, including genetics, hormonal contraceptives, ovarian surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, certain autoimmune diseases, and genetic factors. Hormonal contraceptives may temporarily lower measured AMH levels.

It's essential to understand that a single AMH test should not be used as a definitive verdict on a woman's fertility. Instead, it should be discussed with a gynecologist or fertility specialist, along with other factors like antral follicle count through ultrasound, additional hormone tests, and the woman's reproductive and medical history.

If pregnancy is a near-term goal, unnecessary delay may not be advisable. Egg freezing can be considered based on individual circumstances, but AMH alone should not be a reason to proceed with egg freezing.
