Bangladesh’s new India strategy: ‘Win-win’ ties

Bangladesh's newly elected opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is seeking to maintain a "win-win" relationship with India while pursuing a foreign policy that prioritizes Bangladesh's interests above all else, according to the head of the country's parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs. Jahrat Adib Chowdhury, who leads the committee, told ANI that India remains a key neighbor for Bangladesh, and that the two nations should build their ties around a mutually beneficial approach.

Chowdhury emphasized that Bangladesh's new strategy, dubbed "Bangladesh First," clearly outlines the country's intent to build all foreign relationships on the principle of a win-win strategy. This approach encompasses various issues, including border management, long-standing water-sharing agreements, and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's continued presence in India through professional diplomatic channels.

The BNP government aims to address these matters while safeguarding Bangladesh's national dignity and rights, according to Chowdhury. He stressed that Dhaka does not seek animosity with its neighbors but instead seeks treatment with full dignity, respect, and acknowledgment of its rights, all within the framework of a win-win relationship.

Moreover, Chowdhury stressed the importance of both nations working together for long-term regional stability and cooperation. He argued that bilateral engagement should focus on outcomes that benefit the people of both Bangladesh and India.
