After 2 daughters, Kanpur engineer wanted a son. Then came a Rs 5 lakh deal

A power department engineer from Kanpur, India, named Ram Kumar Verma, 40, sought to acquire a son after already having two daughters. He allegedly struck a deal with a government nurse, Geeta Devi, offering her Rs 5 lakh to help him obtain a baby boy. The deal came to light two months after Geeta was apprehended for attempting to steal a newborn from a Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ghatampur, Kanpur.

The connection between Verma and Geeta was established through their mutual phone records and physical proximity, with Verma's phone location recorded near the CHC at the time of Geeta's arrest. Upon Geeta's detention, she confessed to the alleged deal, claiming Verma had promised her the money if she could arrange a baby boy for him. The 40-year-old nurse was subsequently arrested and produced before the court, where she faced charges of kidnapping, human trafficking, and criminal conspiracy.

Verma, who now serves as a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at an electricity sub-station in Hamirpur, had previously worked in Kanpur Dehat. They had been in contact for several years before the alleged scheme unfolded. On May 10, Geeta attempted to leave the CHC with the baby, but hospital staff intercepted her, alerting the police.

Geeta was taken into custody, and a case was filed against her at the Ghatampur police station. Initially, she denied any involvement in the kidnapping, insisting she acted independently. However, as police scrutinized her phone records, it became apparent that she had been in regular communication with Verma prior to her arrest.
