Access to justice: Reflections from a mobile court

The journey to the remote village of Kampung Tibabar was arduous, with bumpy gravel roads and poor cell phone reception. Upon arrival, a mobile court was set up in the community hall, with representatives from various government agencies providing assistance. Villagers, many of whom were elderly or had young children, arrived carrying documents and files, seeking services such as birth registration and legal guidance.

The magistrate explained that the mobile court aimed to bring vital services directly to the community, as many residents lacked access to stable internet, infrastructure, or basic amenities. The day's proceedings focused on endorsement of late birth registrations, enabling villagers to obtain MyKad, a crucial document for accessing essential services like healthcare, education, and employment.

Despite the seemingly simple tasks, obtaining birth certificates posed significant challenges for these rural families. The lack of official paperwork meant their children were effectively invisible to the system, while the absence of a birth certificate stood between an elderly woman and the medical care she required. The magistrate emphasized that access to justice extends beyond the availability of laws and institutions; it is about ensuring people can actually reach them.

As the day came to an end, the students of SK Tibabar performed a dance, providing a heartening contrast to the hardships faced by the villagers. The choir's rendition of "Lambai" left a lasting impression, highlighting the resilience and hope that even in the face of adversity, communities can find strength and unity.
