2027: Police target AI, tech, intelligence for 2027 election security roadmap

The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled plans to host the sixth annual Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, aimed at creating a detailed security plan for the upcoming 2027 General Elections. CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force Public Relations Officer, announced the event, set to occur from September 21 to 23, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State. The theme for this retreat is "Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections."

This gathering brings together senior command officers, security experts, and key stakeholders to discuss current and emerging security threats, with a focus on Intelligence-led Policing, Police-Community Partnerships, digital technologies, Artificial Intelligence, and other innovative methods to enhance police operations before, during, and after the elections.

The conference will be attended by officers holding the rank of Commissioner of Police and above, providing a forum for collaborative decision-making and the creation of practical measures to bolster the Force's election security capabilities.

Iniedu emphasized that the conference will also aim to devise practical strategies for preserving the safety of voters, electoral personnel, candidates, electoral materials, and the general public during the 2027 elections. To strengthen this commitment, Iniedu reiterated the police force's dedication to professionalizing its personnel to ensure a secure and peaceful environment for Nigeria's next significant election.

State police commands, such as the Lagos State Police Command, are proactively collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance security measures for electoral staff and materials leading up to the 2027 polls.
