2027: Opposition parties begin talks on single candidate

Political parties in Nigeria are set to hold a unity summit on August 18, 2026, as part of efforts to unite opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The summit, organized by the G-100 platform, aims to bring together representatives from six opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, and others, to discuss how they can work together to present a single candidate in the upcoming elections.

The consultations, held away from the media, have resulted in a shared understanding of the need for greater political cooperation among the opposition parties. Participants acknowledged that achieving unity would require concessions and sacrifices from the parties and their leaders. The summit will provide a platform for discussing the modalities for greater political cooperation and will be facilitated by the G-100, who will not dictate the outcome but help create an environment for open discussions.

The group hopes that the proposed summit will help build confidence among the political actors and pave the way for a credible alternative candidate in the 2027 elections.
