2 arrested as police bust illicit brew distillery in Kisumu

On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, police in Kisumu County conducted a targeted operation resulting in the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of illicit alcohol. The National Police Service (NPS) announced that officers from Maraboi Police Post and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) collaborated to raid a home in Dirubi Village, Kibos, following intelligence on the illegal operation.

Upon entering the residence, the detectives apprehended the two persons of interest involved in the production of illicit alcohol. The raid uncovered approximately 100 liters of kangara, 60 liters of chang’aa, and distillation equipment suspected to have been utilized in the manufacture of these illegal brews. Both suspects were transferred to Maraboi Police Post, where they remain in custody awaiting court proceedings.

The seized alcohol and equipment were secured at the station as evidence. The NPS emphasized that this operation is part of their ongoing campaign against the production, distribution, and consumption of illicit brews, which pose a significant risk to public health and security. The statement highlighted the police's commitment to combating illicit brews, reinforcing their ongoing efforts against such activities.

Investigations into the illicit distillation operation are ongoing. Meanwhile, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a nationwide crackdown on illicit brews during a Jukwaa la Usalama forum held in Kisumu County on Monday, August 18.

Murkomen stressed the importance of distinguishing between properly licensed alcohol manufacturers and those involved in adulterating alcohol, particularly within the county.
