17 bandits, 10 police officers killed in Zamfara

On Monday, a fierce battle erupted between security forces and a gang of armed men as they traversed from Zamfara State into Kebbi State. The clash resulted in the deaths of 17 bandits and 10 police officers, along with two civilians, according to the police. The unarmed civilians perished in the skirmish near Rafin Makuku in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The bandits, estimated by locals to number around 240 and travelling on over 200 motorcycles, are believed to have originated from the Sangeko Gap area in Dansadau District of Zamfara State's Maru Local Government. Malam Musa Sani, a local resident, recounted that the bandits formed three groups and camped in a forest between Kakihum and Makuku before launching their attack on Monday morning.

Upon reaching the Rafin Makuku axis, the bandits clashed with a mobile police checkpoint, overpowering the officers. Subsequently, the bandits killed all 10 mobile policemen and two civilians, seizing their firearms. The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that 17 suspected bandits had been neutralized. Four of the attackers' motorcycles were destroyed during the confrontation.

The police spokesperson, DSP Bashir Usman, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of 10 courageous police officers who died in the line of duty, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care. Two civilians also perished in the encounter. The slain officers were lauded for their bravery and professionalism.

The Kebbi State Police Command emphasized that the immediate focus would be on supporting the affected families, tending to the wounded, and continuing operations against the fugitive bandits.
