1 tonne rotten food seized from 60 Bengaluru star hotels, McDonald’s served notice

During a three-day food safety inspection in Bengaluru, officials seized nearly a tonne of expired or rotten food from 60 star hotels across the city. The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration (KFSDA) conducted the inspection, checking 77 food samples from 3- and 5-star hotels in Bengaluru Urban district. The teams also served a notice to a McDonald's outlet on Brigade Road for using the banned Magnesium Sulfite to treat frying oil.

The seized food included chicken, meat, fish, bread, mayonnaise, cooking oil, dairy products, pulses, and chutneys. Officials found expired and improperly stored mutton, fish, chicken, rotten vegetables, expired dairy, stale bakery items, and used cooking oil. Safety violations included non-compliant labelling, misbranding, storage of expired food, improper meat and poultry storage, unhygienic food handling, use of banned artificial colors, and failure to follow prescribed food safety practices.

Hotel Skyye and Pegs and Bottles on Church Street were sealed for storing expired food. The food was properly disposed of, and the teams conducted special inspections at international food chains like KFC, McDonald's, and Subway within the Greater Bengaluru Area.
