Wontumi Files For Bail Pending Appeal

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi, has filed an application for bail while he awaits the outcome of his appeal against a 20-year prison sentence. The Ghanaian politician and former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is accused of allowing unauthorized mining on his company's concession without ministerial approval.

The application argues that the original trial was legally flawed and that there are strong possibilities of success in the appeal. The legal team contends that the trial judge overstepped their authority by taking on the Supreme Court's role, and that the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) is unconstitutional in certain sections.

Throughout the trial, Chairman Wontumi was a compliant and responsible individual, attending every court hearing and never attempting to evade the legal process.
