Events firm ‘quits’ amid bride’s pre-wedding functions, father wins Rs 6.7 lakh payout

A Telangana consumer body recently ruled against a wedding event management company for failing to provide services for a woman's pre-wedding functions due to a payment dispute. The court ordered the company to refund Rs 5.60 lakh to the complainant and pay Rs 1.10 lakh as compensation for the inconvenience caused. The complaint was filed by a 56-year-old man whose daughter's wedding events, to be managed by the company, were to take place in October 2024.

The company had received Rs 13 lakh in advance for the ceremony, which included the engagement, sangeet, haldi, mehendi, pellikuturu, and house decoration events. The complainant alleged that after paying the advance, he agreed to cancel the subsequent events on a refund of Rs 6.60 lakh out of the total amount. However, the company later informed his wife that they would not provide services for the remaining events and demanded additional payment.

The consumer commission ruled that the company's actions constituted a deficiency in service and unfair trade practice, and directed them to refund the amount and pay compensation within 45 days.
