US-Iran Tensions Rise As Trump Rejects Compensation Plea & Issues Counter-Claims

Washington, DC [US], August 10: US President Donald Trump dismissed Iran's request for financial compensation in the aftermath of US-Israeli military actions within the nation, arguing that Tehran should instead bear responsibility for casualties stemming from its own initiatives. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump highlighted that Iranian representatives were requesting compensation for damage inflicted during a five-month-long conflict, which he asserted began after Iran declined to relinquish its nuclear weapon aspirations.

Trump's response to Iran's demand for compensation was described as an "interesting idea" by the US President, who stated that he would present a counter-demand during forthcoming diplomatic discussions. Trump detailed that Iran must face claims for financial restitution concerning casualties and injuries arising from Iranian-linked attacks, including the 2000 USS Cole bombing and various other regional incidents.

Trump further demanded compensation from Iran for all individuals killed and grievously injured by Tehran, referencing its late military commander Qassem Soleimani, whom he alleged had been involved in conflicts resulting in thousands of deaths. Soleimani was eliminated in a drone strike authorized by Trump in 2020 in Baghdad, Iraq.

In addition to these demands, Trump also sought compensation for the families of alleged Iranian regime casualties over the past five decades, asserting that 52,000 people had perished during this period. Trump directed his American negotiators to incorporate these conditions into all future talks with Tehran, firmly stating that he had instructed his representatives to include these demands in any and all future negotiations with Iran.

The counter-claim follows Iran's assertion that war reparations should be linked to conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the lifting of US sanctions and the cessation of naval blockades. The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal, has constrained American strategic options due to sporadic missile and drone attacks disrupting commercial maritime traffic and causing concerns in global markets.

Despite Trump's repeated claims that the maritime corridor remained open, commercial shipping activity in the region has remained significantly disrupted. Trump also threatened a "massive bombing campaign" against Tehran, although Iranian authorities seemed prepared for a prolonged conflict. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran reaffirmed its stance on Sunday, declaring that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until Washington agreed to all of Tehran's conditions, including financial compensation for war damage.

The IRGC's call for an end to war and aggression against Iran alongside its regional allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq echoed similar statements made by security chief Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr. Iran's firm position was underscored by the Guards' declaration that the maritime transit route would continue to serve as a "theater of war" until the US met all of Iran's stipulations in full.
