Under EIA scrutiny, Jelutong landfill project given extension till Oct 18

The Penang government has granted an extension of time (EOT) until October 18 to PLB Engineering Bhd for the Jelutong landfill project, enabling necessary conditions to be met. The developer had previously failed to comply with the environmental impact assessment (EIA) requirements, which halted the project's progress. Penang local government, town and country planning committee chairman Hng Mooi Lye affirmed the government's commitment to closely monitoring the project, ensuring developers adhere to technical, legal requirements, and public interest.

The RM1-billion project involves rehabilitating the 34-hectare former landfill and reclaiming the adjoining sea area near Persiaran Karpal Singh. Initially awarded to PLB through a joint development agreement in 2020 with Penang Development Corporation and the state government, the project was initially halted in March after the environment department rejected the EIA report.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced a final deadline for environmental approval, stating that without it, no further extensions would be granted, and the project would cease under the company's jurisdiction.
