Ukraine drone strike kills 12 in central Russia - mayor

A Ukrainian drone strike in Tatarstan, central Russia, claimed the lives of at least 13 people, marking one of the deadliest attacks against the region since the four-year conflict began. The strike targeted an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, over 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Both Ukraine and Russia have increased their long-range attacks this year, resulting in a surge of civilian casualties, according to the United Nations.

The regional press service reported 13 fatalities and 75 injuries, including 21 hospitalized individuals. Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed the presence of a child among the victims, along with citizens from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, Russia struck Ukraine with its own deadly strikes, including an artillery attack that killed five people in a village near the front line in the Kharkiv region.

On August 10, Russian forces launched a massive artillery strike in the village of Bugaivka, destroying several houses. The Tatarstan region previously reported a massive Ukrainian drone attack, with Ukraine's air force claiming Russia launched 126 drones during the night. In addition, a Ukrainian attack on the Russian border region of Belgorod resulted in the death of a woman, while a Russian drone strike on a taxi in the frontline Kherson region claimed a man's life.

Tens of thousands of households in Ukraine's southern Odesa region remain without power following a Russian power grid strike over the weekend. As winter approaches, concerns grow in Kyiv about the energy crisis, with the city running low on thermal power plants and missing vital missile interceptors since Russia escalated its attacks four years ago.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that his country has virtually no intact thermal power plants following Russian strikes, and direct hits on apartment buildings in recent months have resulted in dozens of civilian deaths.
