Troops Foil ISWAP Attack on FOB Gajiram, Eliminate Extremist Fighters

Linus Aleke in Abuja: Nigerian military troops thwarted an Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) assault on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State, according to a military statement released on August 10, 2026. The attack was launched around 12:20 a.m. in an attempt to overrun the troops’ position.

This is not the first time ISWAP extremists have targeted military facilities in the North-East theatre of operations. The troops, however, successfully repelled the attack, inflicting heavy casualties on the insurgents and recovering weapons, ammunition, and communication devices. Captain Mohammed Goni of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, reported that the attackers sustained significant losses and withdrew after being forced to do so by the determined and effective fire from the troops.

Post-engagement analysis of surveillance footage confirmed that several terrorists were evacuated by the retreating forces. Captain Goni expressed regret over the injuries sustained by a few troops due to a temporary breach in the defenses, which led to damage from rocket-propelled grenade fire. The injured personnel have been airlifted and are currently receiving medical attention.

Following the attack, troops have tightened their deployment in and around the FOB and adjoining areas to maintain control and prevent further terrorist re-engagement. The public is advised to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security agencies to support intelligence sharing. The military reiterates its commitment to pressuring ISWAP terrorists until lasting peace and stability are restored in the North-East.
