TN CM's resolution on Tamil Thaai Vazhthu unanimously passed in Assembly

On Monday, the Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution mandating the singing of Tamil Thaai Vazhthu, the state's official song, at the beginning of government events in the state. The resolution, introduced by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, received support from several legislature parties, including the opposition DMK and AIADMK.

Vijay emphasized that his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government would not compromise on Tamil Nadu's linguistic and cultural rights, stating that Tamil is not just a language, but also the state's life and emotions. He stressed that singing the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu does not contradict India's unity or the political system, instead reflecting the nation's principle of unity in diversity.

The resolution applies to government events in educational institutions, universities, government offices, and public sector undertakings in Tamil Nadu. The move comes in response to the Union Home Affairs Ministry's advisory requiring states and union territories to strictly comply with the directive to play the National Song Vande Mataram before the National Anthem at official events.

The Tamil Nadu government recognized the Tamil Thaai Vazhthu as the state song on December 12, 2021, making it compulsory to sing it first at official functions.
