Terengganu MB says Jalur Gemilang flown without crescent moon and star was ‘unintentional’, ‘isolated’ incident

Terengganu's Chief Minister, Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, stated on August 10 that the display of the Malaysian flag, Jalur Gemilang, without its crescent moon and five-pointed star at Dataran Batu Buruk was an isolated and unintentional incident. Berita Harian reported that he made this assertion after a video of the flag surfaced on social media on Friday.

Dr Samsuri emphasized that steps would be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future, regardless of whether the flag was erected by government officials or members of the public.

Speaking at the Terengganu-level World Ranger Day 2026 celebration at Wisma Darul Iman, Ahmad Samsuri also mentioned that the council would investigate the matter thoroughly. Independently, Kuala Terengganu's mayor, Lizan Che Mat, explained that the original flag had the crescent and star, but they had come loose from their stitching due to strong winds.

He added that the Kuala Terengganu City Council (MBKT) promptly removed the flag upon detecting the issue on Friday and replaced it with a new one. Lizan further assured that MBKT would cease using stitched flags of that type and instead purchase fully finished flags to minimize the risk of a similar incident occurring again. He stressed that the council would take the matter seriously and ensure that all flags under its care were properly maintained and met the required specifications.
