The 1956 Suez Crisis, when Britain and France tried to reclaim the Suez Canal, demonstrated the decline of European empires and the rise of U.S. unilateral power in the region. Overall, the Middle East has become a battlefield for U.S. policy, with the U.S. providing Saudi Arabia's security and establishing a petrodollar system to ensure the dollar's dominance.
