This is because employees have tax withheld from their monthly wages, but often overpay as many expenses are tax-deductible. Advertising costs encompass all expenses related to one's profession, including classic commuter allowances, training expenses, purchasing second-hand furniture for a workroom, costs of a self-inflicted accident on the way to the office, and even allowances for a partner and children during a move.

The Handelsblatt provides an overview. As of now, employees have a 1230 Euro flat-rate for advertising costs deducted from their earnings, even without any expenses claimed, thereby reducing taxable income and tax burden. If one can prove higher advertising costs than the flat-rate, additional tax savings are possible.
