#SHOWBIZ: Blackpink's 10th anniversary marred by fan backlash, Jisoo issues apology

Seoul witnessed the 10th debut anniversary celebration of South Korean girl group Blackpink on August 8, 2021. However, the milestone was marred by fan backlash and criticism over the organization of the reunion event. On August 6, YG Entertainment, Blackpink's management company, announced the event just two days prior, stating it would only be accessible to 40 paying Weverse members in Seoul, without specifying which members would attend.

This short notice, along with vague details and a nine-hour application window, led to disappointment among fans on social media. Ultimately, all four members — Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa — attended the meet & greet at the National Museum of Korea on August 8, but only 40 fans were selected via lottery, which many believed was too few for a decade-long milestone.

Jisoo, the eldest member, directly addressed the backlash on the group's fan platform, expressing regret for causing disappointment and apologizing for the emotional impact on fans. She emphasized that the Blinks were responsible for Blackpink's success and reiterated her love for them. During a Weverse live stream before the event, Jisoo also admitted to feeling regret and communicating a problem in communication, expressing her apology to fans who felt let down.

The emotional toll was evident as Jisoo was seen reading handwritten letters from fans, appearing teary-eyed, while other members expressed gratitude online. Rosé thanked fans for their support from her debut at 19 to her current age of 29, and Lisa wrote a heartfelt message expressing her love and gratitude for the group's 10-year journey together.

Despite the controversy, Blackpink also launched the Blackpink Heritage Collection in collaboration with the National Museum of Korea, marking their continued partnership following their Deadline EP as they reflect on a decade since debuting in 2016 and their rise as a global music powerhouse.
