Scarborough MP Shaun Chen to resign due to health issues

Liberal MP Shaun Chen announced his intention to resign from his position as the representative for Scarborough North in the coming week. The reason behind his decision is attributed to lingering health complications resulting from a car accident that occurred late last year. In a social media post, Chen detailed the injuries sustained during the accident, which have impeded his ability to travel to Ottawa as frequently as the role demands.

Chen explained that after thorough discussions with his family, he determined that stepping down from his position as a member of Parliament would be the most appropriate course of action. Chen, who was elected to office following his tenure as chair of the Toronto District School Board, made the announcement on August 10, 2026.

Prime Minister Mark Carney extended his gratitude to Chen for his contributions, particularly in advocating for young individuals and combating racism. In a message posted on social media, Carney wished Chen a swift recovery and expressed confidence in his continued ability to effect positive change in the future.

Chen's impending departure adds to a series of political resignations this summer. Steven Guilbeault, a former Liberal cabinet minister, is scheduled to vacate his seat at the end of the month. Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall has also announced his intention to leave his position, which he will do in mid-September to join the Brantford Crown attorney's office. NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to step away from his Montreal seat by the end of the summer to run for Québec solidaire in October.
