Rock star Pity Alvarez goes on trial for murder

Cristian Pity Álvarez, the former lead singer of Argentine rock bands Viejas Locas and Intoxicados, appeared in court on Monday for the murder of Cristian Maximiliano Díaz. The fatal shooting occurred on July 12, 2018, in the Samoré neighborhood of Villa Lugano, Buenos Aires. Álvarez accused Díaz of stealing from his backpack, leading to an argument that quickly turned violent.

The rock star then pulled a .25-caliber gun from his jacket and fired four shots at Díaz's head. Prosecutors argue that the attack was sudden and that Álvarez had no reasonable chance to defend himself. They also claim that Álvarez was illegally carrying a weapon at the time. Following his arrest, Álvarez turned himself in to police and later submitted a written statement admitting that his actions were driven by "confusion, madness and fear."

He denied intending to kill Díaz and said he believed his life was in danger. In June 2022, Álvarez was granted house arrest, and the court removed his electronic monitor after his mental health was ruled unfit to stand trial. Now 54, Álvarez has returned to performing, but his lawyers argue that he is capable of facing the trial.

The primary charge could result in eight to 25 years in prison, with a potentially longer sentence if aggravating factors are found during the proceedings. Álvarez's defense lawyer is Javier Marino, while Díaz's family is represented by Fernando Burlando and Fabián Améndola. The trial began with a two-hour hearing that was adjourned until Wednesday.
