Sabah, Sarawak boleh jadi ‘king maker’ tentukan siapa PM, kata Ewon

Upko Ewon Benedick, the President of Upko, has stated that the political power of Sabah and Sarawak should not be underestimated, including their role in determining the leadership of the federal government. The President emphasized that the political influence of Sabah and Sarawak in shaping the direction of the federal government should not be taken lightly, including the appointment of the Prime Minister.

He views this within a broader context, noting that the nation and Malaysia itself would not exist without Sabah and Sarawak, according to Sinar Harian after the 17th Upko Representative Assembly held in Penampang. Consequently, Sabah and Sarawak must be part of the federal government and the administration of this country, and can also act as king makers, either to continue the current system or to bring about changes.

The President highlighted that the position of Sabah and Sarawak must be used to ensure their interests are continually considered in federal governance, in harmony with their role in shaping Malaysia. The Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah echoed these sentiments, stating that the merger of the Sarawak Party and the People's Unity Alliance (GRS) is not expected to become the next king makers if the Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional secure an easy majority during the 16th General Election.

Ewon expressed his hope to contest for the parliamentary seats of Tuaran and Penampang, which the party holds. Further action will be decided through an internal process within the GRS, but he certainly anticipates future opportunities to engage with the Chief Minister and colleagues in the GRS.
