Russian court bars only anti-war party from standing in parliamentary elections

A Moscow court has prohibited Russia's sole liberal and anti-war political party, Yabloko, from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The only registered party opposing Russia's war in Ukraine faced legal action from a pro-Kremlin nationalist party named Rodina. Hundreds of supporters, mostly young people, gathered outside the courthouse to demonstrate their opposition to the verdict, chanting "Shame!" and waving Yabloko flags.

Rodina alleged that Yabloko endorsed an extremist organization through its website and committed copyright infringement by quoting a Soviet-era song in an interview. Additionally, Russia's financial monitoring service claimed that Yabloko received funds from foreign entities, including Germany and the United States. Despite being approved by the Kremlin-controlled Central Electoral Commission, Yabloko had already expelled several members, including two deputy chairmen and deputy leader Maxim Kruglov, who was sentenced for posting about civilian casualties in Ukrainian cities.

Since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, opposition to the Kremlin has been suppressed, and public dissent faces severe penalties. The Yabloko hearing provided a unique opportunity for Russians who oppose the war to gather publicly. The court's decision, however, eliminated Yabloko from the election, potentially reducing motivation for low-turnout voting that could benefit the Kremlin.

With United Russia's support dwindling due to inflation, internet censorship, and drone strikes, Yabloko's anti-war stance has gained traction among the Russian population. But without a political party openly opposing the ruling party, fewer people may feel compelled to vote, potentially leading to a less contested election in favor of the Kremlin.
