PSP on National Day: At 61, Singapore is mature & strong enough to debate different views openly

On Singapore's 61st National Day, the opposition Progress Singapore Party (PSP) highlighted the nation's remarkable progress while calling for open discussions about both its successes and shortcomings. The party's Secretary-General, Leong Mun Wai, emphasized that Singapore is "mature and strong enough to debate different views openly" now that it has reached this significant milestone.

PSP acknowledged the government's leadership and the hard work and sacrifices of generations of Singaporeans, recognizing that it is now crucial to openly examine both the positive achievements and the areas that require improvement. The party listed pressing issues facing the country, including fertility challenges, environmental concerns, and mental health issues, arguing that these highlight the need for a more open dialogue about Singapore's future.

The PSP urged Singaporeans to consider the kind of country being built and whether it aligns with the aspirations of future generations. It noted that while the ruling party has acknowledged the need for change through initiatives like Forward Singapore and the new social compact, it may not have all the answers. The party stressed that good ideas can come from any source and that a free exchange of ideas is essential to finding solutions to the challenges ahead.

PSP also highlighted the importance of addressing the country's fertility challenges, environmental concerns, and mental health issues. They called for alternative land use solutions to address deforestation for housing purposes, emphasizing that Singaporeans from all walks of life should be involved in these discussions. The party's Women's Wing, led by Wendy Low, engaged with Singaporeans at various markets during the National Day weekend to promote this message.
