Kuala Lumpur - A 72-year-old Singaporean man was kidnapped after being lured with a lucrative job offer via social media, according to M Kumar, the head of the Bukit Aman Cyber Crime Department. The victim arrived in Pulau Pinang on July 26 and was tricked into believing he had landed a lucrative job offer through social media. The incident came after Kumar's family severed ties with him ahead of receiving a voice message on August 4, informing him that he had been kidnapped and imprisoned.

The police conducted a raid at a house in Taman Amira, Telaga Bata, Alor Setar on Friday and rescued the victim, who was still armed and wearing a mask. Kumar stated that two suspects, believed to be foreign nationals, were killed during an exchange of gunfire after they attempted to flee the police. Six other suspects were detained, including five Chinese nationals and one local man.

The family of the victim reportedly paid RM48,000 in ransom, while the family of the Chinese woman detained at the same house was asked to pay RM64,000.

Sindicates are believed to have targeted victims through WeChat and social media by offering employment or social companionship before taking them to a house to be held captive. The police also seized two pistols, bullets, and a knife during the operation. Kumar informed that six suspects were arrested between August 7 and 14 to assist in the investigation. He advised the public not to fall for job offers from individuals known only through social media.
