Matiang’i: Opposition must agree before naming 2027 flagbearer to take on Ruto

Fred Matiang’i, Jubilee’s Deputy Party Leader and former Interior Cabinet secretary, has cautioned opposition leaders against rushing to name a joint presidential candidate before the 2027 general election. Speaking during a political engagement with Kameme TV on August 8, 2026, Matiang’i stressed that unity and consensus should come before announcing the candidate.

He argued that the opposition should focus on building a strong coalition, with all potential presidential contenders comfortable with the eventual choice before making the announcement. Matiang’i warned that naming a candidate early without sufficient organization could cost the opposition the election. He emphasized that the timing of the announcement could be today, tomorrow, or even next year, as long as opposition leaders first reach an agreement.

Matiang’i further highlighted that the five candidates not selected as the opposition's presidential candidate would be just as crucial as the chosen one. These contenders must have confidence in the selected candidate and be willing to campaign and work together for the coalition's success. He urged opposition leaders not to politicize the decision, describing it as a difficult and sacrificial choice that requires the support and cooperation of all key players.
