Penang: Good progress seen in two major projects in the state

Two significant infrastructure projects in Penang are nearing completion, showcasing commendable progress in the face of multiple developmental initiatives underway. The Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, slated for completion soon, and the cable car project, which has achieved 31% progress, are among the noteworthy developments. State executive councillor Wong Hon Wai, who represents Paya Terubong assemblyman, confirmed that the expressway is on track for completion.

The cable car project, delayed by months of heavy rain in Penang, has recently gained momentum as weather conditions improved. The first of 15 cable car support towers, Tower No. 3, has been erected in the Botanical Gardens area, standing at 15 metres high. The contractor will ensure its stability before moving on to install Tower No. 2.

The fully operational cable car will feature 50 eight-passenger cabins, traveling at a speed of six metres per second, with the capacity to transport approximately 1,000 passengers per hour. The state government aims to commence operations in June 2027, with the project budget increasing from an initial RM245 million estimate to around RM367.2 million.

All bridge beams on the Bandar Baru Air Itam side have been successfully installed, and construction teams are now concentrating on bridge deck slabs and parapet works. Wong shared updates following a project progress meeting with the construction team, stating that bridge beam installation on the Gelugor side is also progressing steadily, with twelve beams expected to be lifted between July and August 2026, and the remaining six beams scheduled for installation in the third or fourth quarter of 2026.

The contractor has reassured that the project remains on schedule and is expected to be completed by April 2027.
