Parliament Monsson Session Live: Proceedings in both Houses resume amid uproar by Opposition demanding Amit Shah’s presence

Parliament's monsoon session reignited Monday as both houses resumed proceedings despite protests from the Opposition demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The Rajya Sabha had already passed the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026 by voice vote on Monday, aiming to modernize the legislation governing banking records and evidence in line with the sector's digital transformation. The bill's next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 am.

Parliament is set to adjourn for the night following the session, with the Lok Sabha also adjourned until Tuesday. Prior to the debate, the Opposition had demanded Shah's attendance in response to his role in the police actions against student protesters during the Sansad Chalo march on July 20. The Opposition's ire stems from Shah's absence from the legislative floor during the Monsoon Session.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari submitted a notice seeking an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha to discuss the proposed Anti-Defection Law. Tewari's motion calls for a suspension of Question Hour, Zero Hour, and other listed business items to deliberate on the framework of the new legislation designed to deter mass political defections. The current anti-defection law, outlined in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, was introduced through the 52nd Constitutional Amendment Act in 1985.

With only three days remaining in the Monsoon Session, the fate of three significant bills remains uncertain amid ongoing deadlock in Parliament. These bills pertain to women's reservation, delimitation, and amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The Opposition, including Tewari's party, opposes the FCRA Amendment Bill, leaving the outcome of the three proposed measures uncertain as the session nears its conclusion.
