Parliament Monsson Session Live: Lok Sabha adjourned in less than a minute as Opposition raised slogans

The Rajya Sabha concluded the passage of the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026 by voice vote, following its approval in the Lok Sabha on August 5. The legislation aims to modernize the legal framework governing banking records and evidence in line with the sector's digital transformation. The session is set to reconvene at 11 am on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had been scheduled to address the debate regarding a student protest, but the Opposition was informed to remain composed and hear the government's response, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. Earlier in the day, both houses of Parliament experienced adjournments as the Opposition demanded the presence of Shah.

Shah is currently facing criticism from the Opposition for his absence during the Monsoon Session, following his role in the Cockroach Janta Party-led protest against police violence against student demonstrators on July 20. Congress MP Manish Tewari has submitted a notice to discuss the introduction of a new Anti-Defection Law in the Lok Sabha.

Tewari sought the suspension of Question Hour, Zero Hour, and other scheduled matters to deliberate on the proposed framework, which seeks to prevent mass political defections. The existing anti-defection law, outlined in the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, was enacted through the 52nd Constitutional Amendment Act in 1985. With just three days remaining in the Monsoon Session, the future of three crucial bills remains uncertain due to the ongoing impasse in Parliament.

These bills encompass women’s reservation, delimitation, and amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). The Opposition has also expressed opposition to the FCRA Amendment Bill, leaving the fate of these three proposed measures unclear as the session concludes.
