Pakistan, Russia explore cooperation in farm machinery, inputs, animal health

Pakistan and Russia convened a meeting on Monday to explore avenues for bolstering bilateral cooperation in agriculture and livestock sectors, with a specific emphasis on farm machinery, fertilizers, pesticides, vaccines and related technologies. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, led the discussion, which included Nikita Buzanov, a representative from the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation.

Minister Hussain underscored Pakistan's profound interest in its relations with Russia and stressed the necessity of enhancing trade, technology, and technical cooperation in sectors integral to food security and agricultural productivity. He highlighted the imperative of adopting modern and efficient agricultural machinery to augment farm productivity, curtail production costs, and foster mechanisation, expressing a keen interest in deepening Russian collaboration in this domain.

Minister Hussain also emphasised the significance of guaranteeing the prompt availability of high-quality fertilizers and pesticides at reasonable prices, positing that fortified collaboration with Russia could escalate agricultural productivity and bolster food security. Additionally, he advocated for heightened cooperation in livestock and animal health, particularly concerning access to superior vaccines and contemporary technologies for disease prevention and enhanced livestock productivity.

In response, Buzanov provided an overview of Russia's eagerness to expand agricultural cooperation with Pakistan, affirming that Russian entities and institutions were prepared to investigate prospects for supplying machinery, fertilizers, pesticides, and vaccines to Pakistan. He also emphasized the potential for augmenting bilateral trade in agriculture-related goods and fortifying institutional ties between the two nations.

Both parties concurred on the importance of proceeding with consultations and exploring practical and mutually advantageous projects aimed at elevating agricultural productivity, farm inputs, and Pakistan's comprehensive food security.
