He called for ECOWAS to act as a neutral mediator and develop a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) guided by the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA), and other regional mechanisms.
This MoU should establish clear rules on market access, truck movement, offloading, consignment allocation, and dispute resolution to prevent further disruptions to legitimate cross-border trade. NOPPMAN estimates that the current impasse has already resulted in a loss of approximately ₦1 billion for Nigerian traders.
