Nigeria Chess Federation Commends Successful Hosting of FIDE World Amateur Championships, Abuja 2026

Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, President of the Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), hailed the triumphant hosting of the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Abuja 2026 as a significant milestone for Nigerian sport and African chess. The championships, held at the Bolton White Hotel from August 1st to 8th 2026, marked the first time Africa had hosted this prestigious competition, attracting players and fans from all corners of the globe.

Dankwambo expressed deep gratitude to FIDE for bestowing the hosting rights upon Abuja after a rigorous selection process. This decision underscored international trust in Nigeria's organizational prowess, sporting infrastructure, and dedication to advancing chess.

The championships yielded a moment of national pride as 14-year-old Ekunke Odey Goodness triumphed in the Rapid event, scoring 9 points from 11 rounds. Eugene Unwana and Bomo Kigigha claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively, completing Nigeria's podium sweep. Other standout performers included U1700, U2000 and U2300 rating champions Omoruyi Sandra Osarugue, Efemuai Odafe Benedict and WFM Asanga Nsisong.

Nigerian players also dominated the U1700, U2000 and U2300 open categories, with Efemuai Odafe Benedict claiming the U2300 title. Indian players saw notable victories in the U1700 and U2000 Open categories.

NCF Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko praised the collaborative efforts of the NCF, FIDE, and the African Chess Confederation, noting the expansion of chess activities across Nigeria, particularly at grassroots and school levels. Dankwambo emphasized the rejuvenation of Nigeria's sports sector, citing improvements in athlete welfare, discipline, innovation, strategic planning, and administration.

He also thanked Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State for their support during the championships, reiterating the need for stronger partnerships with local governments, corporations, and other stakeholders to further develop chess and create pathways for future champions. The NCF also acknowledged the contributions of FIDE, the African Chess Confederation, the National Sports Commission, and all participants, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters.
