Google engineer Vidy Thatte created an experimental browser called Gem that generates websites on-the-fly using artificial intelligence. Gem was first showcased on X on July 22, followed by a TestFlight version a few days later, described as a "generative browser" on Apple’s listing. Unlike conventional browsers, Gem does not retrieve webpages directly from their servers.
Instead, it treats the URL entered by the user as a prompt and forwards it to Google's Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite model, which produces a webpage in response. Entering a real website address results in Gem creating its own interpretation of that site, while an imaginary URL generates an entirely new website based on what the AI believes should exist.
Google's Flash-Lite model enables almost instantaneous generation of pages on demand, with minimal practical difference between conventional webpage loading and on-demand generation. However, users must provide their own Gemini API key to use Gem, as it doesn't include access itself. Each URL results in an API request, leaving users responsible for the resulting usage.
Gem also offers users the ability to modify the appearance of generated websites, with nearly two dozen styles available. Additionally, Gem can alter the content displayed on pages, rewriting article text or creating entirely new information, including fictitious social media profiles.
