NATO Says Russia Cannot Open Another Front Against Alliance While War in Ukraine Continues

NATO's Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence director, Jānis Sārts, asserts that Russia currently lacks the military capability to launch another major front against the Alliance while its ongoing war in Ukraine persists. Speaking in a Latvian news agency podcast, Sārts emphasized that Russia remains a long-term threat to NATO but does not presently possess the resources to initiate another significant military engagement.

According to Sārts, Russia's military capacities are currently restricted by the conflict in Ukraine. He also noted that NATO has already formulated its own defense strategies. Sārts stated that as long as the war in Ukraine continues, Russia is ill-equipped to open another military front against NATO countries, and there is no evidence suggesting it intends to do so.

However, experts differ on the timeline for Russia's potential military expansion. Sārts highlighted that the pace of Russia's military build-up hinges on how Moscow allocates its resources. He differentiated between rapid investments in capabilities and long-term resource allocation based on efficient utilization. Sārts also criticized alarmist rhetoric about an imminent Russian attack on the Baltic states, arguing that such statements can hinder constructive discussions about the actual threats faced by NATO members.

He advocated for decision-making based on data and facts rather than perpetuating a constant state of public panic. The remarks come amidst ongoing Western concerns over Russia's potential long-term military goals. The Wall Street Journal reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin might attempt to test NATO's resolve through a limited attack on an Alliance member in the coming years.
