Meta launches new AI model Muse Glimmer

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the introduction of the new AI model Muse Glimmer on Monday, expressing his support for open-source AI systems. The lightweight model, smaller than its rivals, is designed to run agentic tasks directly on a user's computer with just a single graphics card. Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta plans to release more powerful models soon, arguing that an overly concentrated AI power is inherently problematic.

Open-weight models, like Muse Glimmer, offer lower costs and customizable code compared to closed models used by companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Hacking incidents involving closed-source models have prompted businesses to favor open-weight alternatives. Chinese startups are currently leading the race in open-weight models.

Despite a recent 10% drop in its shares, Meta's Muse Glimmer and the upcoming Muse Spark 1.2, a more advanced model, are anticipated to boost the company's position in the competitive AI market. In addition to the model release, Meta is investing $1 billion to address data center infrastructure concerns and support local communities affected by the expansion of AI infrastructure, a challenge that the tech giant faces in the US.
