Liverpool can't keep letting levels drop, says Iraola after Monaco defeat

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola lamented his team's inability to maintain the necessary performance levels following a 3-2 friendly loss to Monaco at Anfield on Sunday. The Reds had previously lost 4-2 to Leeds United, raising concerns about their readiness for the upcoming Premier League season opener against Newcastle United on August 23.

Iraola acknowledged that Liverpool dominated the first half, particularly the first 30 minutes, but conceded that they lack the required level to sustain the game's duration. He emphasized that as soon as any changes are made, the players start to tire, and they are unable to maintain the desired level throughout. Captain Virgil van Dijk, goalkeeper Alisson Becker, and winger Cody Gakpo made their first appearances since the World Cup.

Iraola, who joined Liverpool in June following Arne Slot's departure, acknowledged that it will take time for the players to adapt, but they need more training sessions. He also mentioned that they are cautiously handling new signing Jeremy Jacquet, who has been dealing with a shoulder injury and a recent knee issue.
