KNUST Administrators declare indefinite strike over allowance disparities

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced an indefinite strike commencing on Monday, August 10, 2026. The strike is in response to what the association views as significant disparities in allowances and subpar working conditions for non-teaching staff.

GAUA Secretary Phanuel Seli Kwadzo Asense highlighted that the highest-paid non-teaching staff member earns nearly 50% less than the lowest-paid teaching staff member, creating a significant financial gap that impacts the wellbeing of administrators and their ability to provide quality services on campus. This decision followed an emergency meeting where the association's leadership concluded that negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other government officials had not yielded satisfactory results.

Several administrative offices, including those in IT, Accounting, Development, and the university's hospitals, have ceased operations as part of the industrial action. Asense emphasized that the strike will persist until the association's demands are met, and a monitoring team is set to observe any breaches of the strike.
