Kisumu’s first governor Jack Ranguma declares bid to reclaim county seat

Former Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma declared his intention to contest the 2027 gubernatorial election in August 2026, exactly one year prior to the upcoming General Election. Ranguma, who served as the county's first elected governor from 2013 to 2017, aimed to complete the development agenda he began during his first term. He announced his decision on August 10, 2026, marking the same date he will face the 2027 election.

Ranguma expressed confidence in reclaiming the governor's seat and continued his administration's work from where it left off in 2017. He highlighted the completion of 1,157 projects during his tenure, including 522 kilometers of roads, 95 dispensaries upgraded to health centres, investments in education, water, healthcare, security, and the informal sector.

He also cited a scholarship program for 280 students and a school feeding program for Early Childhood Development learners that improved school attendance and teacher retention.

Ranguma dismissed claims that his political comeback was sponsored by another politician, insisting that he made his own political decisions. He acknowledged his involvement in the broader government and pledged to prioritize local economic development by ensuring county projects benefit residents and businesses within Kisumu. He also vowed to rehabilitate access roads, address water insecurity, and improve the welfare of county employees through capacity building, training, and promotions.
