Karan Johar feared a wiewer would hit him after a KANK screening: ‘Shame on you’

Two decades after its release, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK) continues to polarize audiences and critics alike. The Karan Johar-directed film, which sparked heated debates due to its portrayal of infidelity, is now viewed as a cult classic. In a recent Instagram post, the filmmaker recalled the intense reactions he faced during a paid preview screening before the movie's 2006 release.

Sitting behind a middle-aged couple who appeared angry, Karan was convinced he might face physical confrontation. The scene of Dev (Shah Rukh Khan) and Maya (Rani Mukerji) succumbing to their attraction in the hotel elevator further unsettled him, as Lady Saree dropped her popcorn in shock, causing her husband to angrily dismiss the film as a "dream sequence."

Karan Johar also recounted an encounter with a woman and her crying daughter who felt betrayed by the film, accusing him of endorsing infidelity. The filmmaker later clarified that KANK was never meant to endorse infidelity and merely explored the consequences of stepping outside the boundaries of marriage. He expressed gratitude to the cast and crew, acknowledging that the film sparked important conversations and challenged societal norms.
