Judicial probe into Mir Raza’s death deferred after family backs new police team

The Sindh government has postponed its plan to establish a judicial commission to probe the sudden demise of Karachi teenager Mir Raza Ali, following his family's expressed trust in a newly appointed police investigation unit. Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab recently spoke with Mir Raza's mother, and the family expressed confidence in the new police team to investigate, according to Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar.

The government had initially decided to conduct a judicial inquiry to ensure transparency and satisfy the family. However, after the formation of the new police team, the family now believes the new team should investigate the case. The family had raised concerns about the proposed judicial commission, and Mir Raza's father, Mir Hussain, stated that the family did not support the proposal at the moment.

In a letter to the chief justice of the Sindh High Court, Mir Hussain opposed the proposed judicial commission, alleging that the Sindh government was trying to create controversy under the pretext of a judicial inquiry to avoid investigations. Mir Hussain maintained that the police had the legal authority to investigate the case and it should be handed over to them.

The family is instead confident in the new police team. Mir Raza's lawyer, Jibran Nasir, further emphasized that the family had neither requested nor endorsed the formation of a judicial commission. Forensic evidence, including potentially significant findings from Mir Raza's physical and chemical examination, is now being investigated.
