Aachen Regional Court sentenced a former nurse to life imprisonment in November for 10 murders and 27 attempted murders, according to a November report. Berlin prosecutors are investigating over 120 additional cases linked to the former nurse, who killed 10 patients, the Aachen-based prosecutor said. In Aachen, 39 new autopsies have been ordered, while Cologne has conducted seven autopsies, a spokesperson for the latter told dpa.

The Aachen court found the crime had a particularly serious level of seriousness, typically denying the possibility of release after 15 years. The nurse administered excessive sedative drugs to critically ill patients at a hospital in Wurselen, near Aachen, sometimes combined with painkillers, and in some cases repeatedly, according to the court.

The former nurse denies the charges, which occurred between December 2023 and May 2024. The renewed investigation now includes murder cases dating back before the aforementioned period. The former nurse worked at Wurselen Hospital since 2020, and the current investigation is probing cases that occurred since September 2022. More cases may be identified, according to the prosecutor.

Aachen prosecutors previously said they may file additional charges. The trial date is still to be set, but prosecutors expect it to occur next year, a spokesperson said. The Cologne prosecutor is also investigating a murder case linked to the former nurse, as the individual had previously worked at a hospital in Cologne until 2020. The investigation is complex and will take a long time, a spokesperson said.
