Jackie, the famous California bald eagle, dies after weeks of intensive care

Jackie, the famed California bald eagle who gained an online following, passed away on Monday following weeks of medical care. The Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation facility, took in the bird after she was assaulted by other eagles. Jackie struggled with internal health problems that resulted in anaemia and weight loss.

Despite persistent treatment and the coordinated efforts of the veterinary team and specialist consultants, her condition continued to worsen. A livestream showcasing the nest of Jackie and her mate, Shadow, in Big Bear Valley gained hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, had a devoted audience since Jackie hatched in 2012.

Jackie and Shadow had been a pair since 2018, according to the Friends of Big Bear Valley website. The Ojai Raptor Center expressed deep sorrow, stating that caring for her was an exceptional honor. They acknowledged that this news would deeply impact the many individuals worldwide who followed her journey and supported those treating her.

The center pledged to collaborate with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, providing a more thorough statement with further details on her treatments and test results. Jackie's remains were handed over to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
