Jackie, beloved Big Bear bald eagle, dies at 14 after prolonged illness

Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle who captured the hearts of millions through livestream cameras, has passed away at the age of 14 after a prolonged illness. The Ojai Raptor Center confirmed her death on Monday, August 10, stating that she succumbed to her condition after three weeks of intensive medical care. Despite the efforts of veterinary specialists and constant monitoring, Jackie's health continued to deteriorate.

She had been receiving oxygen therapy, supportive treatment, and round-the-clock care in the intensive care unit. The announcement marked the end of the life of one of California's most recognized wild bald eagles. Jackie and her mate, Shadow, gained international fame through the livestream cameras set up by Friends of Big Bear Valley, allowing viewers to witness their nesting seasons and the raising of eaglets in the challenging San Bernardino Mountains.

Jackie was believed to be the first bald eagle ever hatched in Big Bear Valley, hatched in spring 2012 to parents known as Ricky and Lucy. She later paired with Shadow, becoming a central figure in an online community that closely followed their nesting seasons. Her resilience was evident as she continued to return to the nest despite harsh conditions, including heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and storms.

Even during the 2025 nesting season, Jackie raised three eaglets. However, her final weeks were marked by a rapid decline in health, with critically low blood values and oxygen therapy being administered. The Ojai Raptor Center expressed their deep sorrow, acknowledging the immense support and love Jackie received from the global audience that followed her journey.
