Issues in Ukrainian-Polish relations should not undermine strategic partnership – Stefanchuk

Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada emphasized on Monday that issues surrounding Ukrainian-Polish relations should not undermine the strategic partnership between the two nations. Stefanchuk met with Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Marshal of the Polish Sejm, and held a candid discussion about the state of their relations.

Stefanchuk stated that it is crucial not to allow past issues or emotions to weaken the partnership that Ukraine and Poland have developed over the years. He highlighted that both nations share common security interests, a mutual European future, and the significant sacrifice Ukraine is making to protect the freedom of Europe.

The Ukrainian leader and his Polish counterpart discussed the need to restore trust, increase interparliamentary dialogue, and boost bilateral contacts. They also agreed to enhance parliamentary formats and revive the concept of a joint Ukrainian-Polish expert group, particularly to share Poland's experience with European integration.

Stefanchuk addressed the sensitive topic of historical memory, asserting that these matters must be addressed through dialogue, mutual respect, and historical research, rather than actions that exacerbate societal divisions. He presented Czarzasty with a Ukrainian edition of Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński's works, translated by Roman Lubkivsky, as a token of the meeting.

Ukraine and Poland have consistently demonstrated their ability to find common ground even in challenging circumstances. Stefanchuk emphasized that the focus should be on preserving the progress made and strengthening the bond as neighbors, partners, and allies.
