Israeli military closes Palestinian Christian village Taybeh to halt settler attacks

TEL AVIV - The Israeli military has ordered the closure of the West Bank Christian village of Taybeh to non-residents, citing concerns over escalating settler attacks against Palestinians in the region. According to the military, the closure pertains exclusively to Israelis and not Palestinians. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will deploy soldiers to the area upon receiving any reports of violations, their primary mission being to disperse gatherings and detain suspects to ensure the safety of residents and maintain order.

Taybeh is one of the few remaining Christian villages in the West Bank and has attracted visitors, including the Greek Orthodox patriarch and the Roman Catholic cardinal of Jerusalem. The village is also home to Taybeh Brewing Co, the Middle East's oldest microbrewery. Recent incidents have seen Western countries imposing sanctions on settler groups in response to violent actions against Palestinians.

In June, Palestinian civil defense firefighters and a local priest reported that Israeli settlers had obstructed Palestinians attempting to extinguish a significant fire near Taybeh. The villagers described a pattern of intimidation and unjustified violence, which they claim undermines their fundamental rights. The United Nations released an inquiry on Tuesday, implicating Israeli authorities in settler attacks that have resulted in the deaths, injuries, and displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank.

The Israeli mission in Geneva, however, rejected these findings, asserting that Israeli officials, including the president and prime minister, have consistently condemned violence against Palestinians.

Approximately 50,000 Palestinian Christians reside in the West Bank and Jerusalem, a community with roots dating back to antiquity and access to many of the faith's most significant holy sites.
